The 2024 Academy Awards ceremony turned out to be a night of surprises, lengthy speeches, and the usual dose of Kimmel-style roasting. While some categories delivered predictable winners, several unexpected wins broke up the monotony and made the night an interesting watch.

The evening started off with Da’Vine Joy Randolph nabbing the Best Supporting Actress award for “The Holdovers.” Other surprise wins included Jonathan Glazer taking home Best International Feature for “The Zone of Interest” and delivering a powerful speech about political conflicts.

Cord Jefferson snagged Best Adapted Screenplay for “American Fiction,” surprising those who’d pegged other films to win.

In a slightly bizarre moment, John Cena delivered a bit of surprise nudity while presenting “Poor Things” with the Best Costume Design award. The Yorgos Lanthimos-directed film proved to be a darling of the Academy, also winning Makeup and Hairstyling, Production Design, and Best Actress for Emma Stone.

The real heavy-hitter of the night, however, was Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer”. The film scored big, earning Robert Downey Jr. a surprise Best Supporting Actor win and dominating the technical categories, including Visual Effects, Cinematography, and Original Score. Nolan himself took home the Best Director Oscar.
