Not Slim or Ultra, Samsung’s third foldable for the year is “Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition”

Samsung has been rumored to be working on a third foldable phone for 2024 for a while now. We’ve been referring to it by various names, including Galaxy Z Fold 6 Slim, Galaxy Z Fold Ultra, or Galaxy Z Fold 6 Ultra, based on different industry leaks.

Now, we have a new name to add to the registry. According to a leak by insider Evan Blass, the foldable will be called “Galaxy Fold Special Edition” instead.

Blass, a well-known tech tipster, revealed the new name via a post on X (formerly Twitter). Accompanying it are a pair of posters revealing few details of the device.

The first poster reveals the phone’s thickness when folded and unfolded. It measures 4.9mm and 10.6mm, respectively. While not quite the slimmest foldable on the market—Honor Magic V3 has that title with a 4.4mm thickness unfolded—it’s a notable improvement over the standard Z Fold 6, which measures 5.6mm when folded and 12.1mm unfolded.

The second poster sheds light on the display sizes. The Special Edition will feature a 6.5-inch cover screen and an 8-inch main display when unfolded. For comparison, the Z Fold 6 features a 6.3-inch cover display and a 7.6-inch main screen.

While notable, the changes in the new model aren’t that significant. The device is also expected to lose S-Pen support due to its slimmer design. This might explain why Samsung is rumored to release the Special Edition Fold only in China and Korea. The launch could happen sometime in September.
