In a fun new discovery, Reddit user u/garibaninyuzugulurmu has spotted the codename for the upcoming Nothing Phone (3) buried within a system dump of the Phone (2a).

According to the post of r/NothingTech, the Phone (3) is codenamed Asteroid. If you’ve been following Nothing’s quirky naming pattern, this isn’t a huge surprise—they’ve consistently used retro game names for their devices.

For a little background, previous Nothing models were codenamed after vintage games, too. The original Nothing Phone 1 was “Spacewar,” Phone 2 was “Pong,” and the recently launched Phone 2a got the name “Pacman.” Even the Phone 1 by CMF, Nothing’s affordable sub-brand, went with “Tetris.” So, “Asteroids” fits right into the theme.

Nothing Phone (3) Internal Codename

Interestingly, Nothing has another playful approach to naming products after Pokémon for internal use. For instance, the Phone (2a), model number A124, was internally referred to as Aerodactyl which has 124 as its National Pokédex Number.

This leads us to believe the internal code name for Phone 3 is Aracanine, given that the phone and a Plus/Pro version were spotted with the A059 and A059 model numbers back in September.

CEO Carl Pei has already confirmed the phone (3) is not coming until next year. But it has not stopped them from teasing it – the phone 3 was recently teased during the launch of Nothing Ear (open).
