Android 15 reaches AOSP, update rollout timeline unclear for most users

The wait for the official rollout of Android 15 continues, but developers can finally get their hands on the goods. Google today uploaded the source code for the latest iteration of its mobile operating system to the Android Open Source Project (AOSP).

AOSP is the foundation of the Android operating system, made available to developers and device manufacturers so they can customize, modify, and distribute their own versions of Android.

However, most users will still need to wait for an over-the-air (OTA) update. Even Pixel owners, who typically see new Android versions first, won’t receive Android 15 right away. The eligible Pixel phones are slated to receive the update “in the coming weeks.”

The timeline for other manufacturers is even less concrete. According to Google, select devices from Samsung, Honor, iQOO, Lenovo, Motorola, Nothing, OnePlus, Oppo, Realme, Sharp, Sony, Tecno, vivo, and Xiaomi will get the update “in the coming months.”

So, patience is the key for most users. For developers, though, their Android 15 journey begins today. You can now explore the new features and prepare your apps for the upcoming platform update.
