A see-through TV may not be practical, but at least it’s a cool novelty that people would like to have. This is what I think went through the LG’s executives when they decided to launch the 77-inch OLED Signature T.
LG Transparent OLED
LG has been the market leader for OLED TVs for quite some time now, but it has never sold a model like this.
Not only does the OLED Signature T flaunt a big 77-inch OLED panel, but it can also go transparent when not in use.
And it is not a prototype or something that you would only see in exhibits and showcases. The LG Signature OLED T 4K will actually hit the market, in some form that is.
I mean, LG has not finalized all the details but has confirmed that it will go on sale with the monstrous 77-inch OLED screen later this year.
Let’s start with the elephant in the room, which is the T (Transparency, if you still have not figured it out) in the Signature T.
The OLED panel on the front is translucent enough to let you see beyond it.
The “T” in LG Signature OLED T
In normal conditions, there will be another layer, a “black screen,” adding necessary contrast to let you enjoy content like you would on a normal TV.
The real magic happens when you press that button on the remote and turn on the Transparent mode.
This retracts the contrast film in the background, revealing the LG Signature OLED T in all its glory.
You can then have the TV show artwork, photos, and screensavers using the Always-On-Display (AOD) feature.
The bottom “T-Bar” section can be configured to show weather notifications and news updates, along with other useful widgets.
In one of the demos at the CES 2024, LG even transformed the Signature T into a virtual aquarium.
Zero Connect Wireless Technology
Thus, you don’t have to push the TV to the wall. It can stay right in the middle of your living room, acting like an artwork or aquarium.
You don’t even have to go through the hassle of wire management as there’s just one, the power plug.
Barring that, the LG Signature OLED T is fully transparent, thanks to the wireless transmission tech that it inherits from the M series.
You can place the Zero Connect Box anywhere within a 30-foot range and have it transmit 4K videos and audio to the Signature T wirelessly.
The Rest of The LG Transparent OLED T
Talking about the specs, the transparent LG OLED TV is powered by the latest α (Alpha) 11 AI processor.
As per the company, this new image processor is 70% more powerful and 30% faster than its predecessor.
Likewise, it has down-firing stereo speakers and runs on a special version of LG’s webOS.
The biggest caveat of the Signature T is that it lacks the Micro Lens Array (MLA) tech you get in LG’s other flagship OLED TV.
Thus, you are not getting the sharpest and the brightest OLED screen despite paying a premium — the price is not fixed yet, but we know it won’t be affordable.
The title still goes to the newly announced LG M4 OLED TV.
Price and Availability
Coming back to the Signature T, LG will offer it in stand-alone, against-the-wall, and wall-mount options. It will be commercially available probably in the second half of 2024.
The price and availability are still up for anyone’s guess.
